The (Other) Austrian Death Machine

Aeons of Ashes, Austria's answer to both Lamb of God and Gojira, returned last month with 'Impatience,' the follow-up to their 2014 LP 'Shutdown,' and, though I know it's only Monday, I'm ready to declare the track "Shift of Perspective" the best 4:52 seconds of my week. One spin will tell you that the year the band spent off of the road, refining and expanding their sound, was time well spent. Though still clearly grounded in melodic death metal, with a healthy dose of metalcore thrown in for head-banging purposes, this 7 song EP feels like a band that is on the cusp of dynamic metallic greatness. The melodic moments are few but are used to great effect, adding depth, dimension and a sense of purpose to the experience. My only complaint, if you really want to call it that, is that this EP is less than 15 minutes shy of being a proper LP. Here's hoping that a full-length is in the works and that the tracks on 'Impatience' will appear there, possibly in slightly remixed versions because I'm a total sucker for that. Until then, enjoy some neck-snapping Austrian melodeath. Rage On! JPR
