I get this is not heavy metal news, but it's music news, none the less. Anyone who knows me will agree that I fucking despise country music, it's not my cup of tea by any stretch of the imagination. But, I think by now we all have heard what happened in Las Vegas at a country music concert, and quite frankly, it's fucked up. As of the writing of this (1046 hours) the reports are estimating that more than 50 people have been killed in a hail of what sounds on the videos to be like automatic gunfire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Four-hundred others were rushed to the hospital in various conditions.
We metal heads have an understanding of what can happen when some lone sack of shit grabs his weapon, goes to a concert, and fucks everyone's life up. Refer to the neanderthal (his name will not be mentioned) who entered a venue in Ohio on December 08th, 2004 and killed the legendary Dimebag Darrell, along with Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson, Alrosa Villa, Erin Halk. and Nathan Bray. There were other injuries there as well.
To metal heads, music is life. When we aren't playing, or listening to music, we are attending concerts. I have no doubt that many of the people at that country music concert share(d) a similar passion for their brand of music. Those that don't just went for a good time, and there is nothing wrong with that. Then you have some raging fucking lunatic with an axe to grind (no motive has been found, yet, so who knows what his problem was) who destroys their entire life. For what? Whether they were shot, or not, they will never be the same. Do you think any one of them will be able to attend another concert and not be jittery as fuck, or break down? I've been a cop for 15 years, critical incidents change you, and not in a good way. You can bounce back, but life is never the same.
There is a deep connection in our minds with music. Certain songs bring back certain memories. Music is awesome, it is one of the greatest gifts there is and can change our very mood. Imagine what these people will now have to endure when they hear a piece of country music played on the radio. This is what terrorist shitbags like this asshole do. They not only kill others physically, but metaphorically, as well. These people that lived have died a little inside, all because they wanted to hear some fucking music and see some bands.
So from the Metal Abyss community, our thoughts are with the attendees and their families. You should not have had to endure this kind of bullshit. But, you will come out stronger in the end. You can endure it and overcome it. The metal community did, and you will, too.
Here's to all the first responders (Police, Fire, and EMS) that run towards danger "so that others may live". A scene that chaotic and dynamic is a nightmare for even the most seasoned first responder, they deserve respect and gratitude for the selfless work they do daily and especially at a scene such as this one.
Final point, to prove how fucked up people are, in general, go to the comments sections on any Facebook page or news site. Everyone just has to make this shit political and push their ideology and agenda. Rather than just shutting the fuck up and sending their thoughts and condolences it will be an all out war between left and right political twats.
